Mrs Mad's humble opinion
8/10 You are working hard. Well done.
What's it about?
The diary of a young girl, escaping from the witch hunters!
What happens?
Mary's grandmother is a witch and after being tortured is hung, as is the custom. Mary is whisked away by a Gentlewoman who arranges her passage to the New World. Mary's journal tells of her life among the settlers, her fears of detection and the friendships she makes, until again the shadow of witchcraft falls upon her and she must escape her tormentors!
Is it easy to read?
Quite easy to read for an independent reader.
Anything else?
This book is not for those who want ghosts and witches on broomsticks. It's much more subtle and much more real. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It holds your attention because it seems to be based in reality and is very plausible. There is a follow-up novel called Sorceress.
Other books by Celia Rees include City of Shadows, Pirates!, Sorceress, The Host Rides Out, The Soul Taker, The Vanished, Truth or Dare?.
