Mrs Mad's humble opinion
9/10 Very good. I am pleased with this.
What's it about?
Three teenagers alone in a city destroyed by a terrifying plague.
What happens?
When Fran returns to London from two weeks cut off from the rest of the world, she finds a nightmare come true. Empty streets, barricades, people threatening to shoot her and most shockingly, the discovery of her parents, dead. With her close friend Harriet and schoolmate Shahid, Fran starts a desperate journey to find safety outside the city.
Is it easy to read?
I would recommend this book for strong and mature readers.
Anything else?
An amazing novel. The detail and characterisation is incredibly real and genuinely frightening. It is just so plausible. Jean Ure has produced a book that will be around for a long time. Plague 99 won the Children's Book of the Year Award 1990, and the Lancashire Book Award.
Other books by Jean Ure include After the Plague, Becky Bananas this is your life!, Big Tom, Family Fan Club, Shrinking Violet, The Secret Life of Sally Tomato.
Who says so?
This review by Mrs Mad.
The publisher reckons...
Three teenagers survive a plague that has killed their parents and left London a ghost town. This book won the Lancashire Book Award.

It's good!
The Guardian
A cross between Lord of the Flies and Day of the Triffids... it is better written than anything by Wyndham and I would prefer her characters to Golding's unconvincing schoolboys.
