Mrs Mad's humble opinion
8/10 You are working hard. Well done.
What's it about?
A strange being lying hidden in an old shed and a boy's desperate fight to keep his sister alive.
What happens?
When Michael and his parents move to an old run down house his baby sister becomes dangerously ill. In an old derelict out building Michael finds a half dead creature, gradually with the help of a new friend, Michael brings Skellig back to life. All the time his baby sister is fighting for her own life, is there anything Michael can do to her?
Is it easy to read?
This is quite easy to read but the subject matter makes it more suitable to a slightly more mature child. Both girls and boys should give this a try and if there are any ideas you don't understand, ask an adult.
Anything else?
Winner of the Whitbread Children's Book Award 1998. This is a strange and gentle story, it is written with such truth that you know the author will not give a happy ending just because it is written for children. The sadness which runs through the book is balanced by the genuine power we can gain from our friends and those who care about us. I found it impossible to put down in fact I read it all in one go! At the end all I could think was how wonderful it would be to find something like Skellig.
Other books by David Almond include Heaven Eyes, Kit's Wilderness, Secret Heart, The Fire Eaters.

The publisher reckons...
Michael's baby sister is ill, and the whole house is sick with her. While his parents spend time at the hospital, he explores their new home. In the old, derelict garage he finds something sinister: a strange creature, part owl, part angel. Is it something good? Or something evil?
And what do you think?

The story is about Micheal, A boy who has moved into a tatty house. There is a crumbling garage in the back garden. He has been forbidden to explore it. He finds a creature inside. What happens next you will have to read it and see for yourself. I rate th

I really like the fact that skellig acts all grumpy, but inside he is really good. I think that the way the book doesn't gve everything away quicky, like what skellig is and will his sister survice?

Tremendously innovative, highly original and very moving. David Almond is a fascinating new voice.
Michael Morpurgo, The Guardian.
A quite extraordinary book. Tender, lyrical, yet it fairly crackles with suspense. He makes the incredible utterly credible. This is a story which burns bright from first to last, and for a long time after the last is over. David Almond is a very spec
