Mrs Mad's humble opinion
6/10 Good, but I think it could be better.
What's it about?
A story about a young girl's voyage of self discovery and growing awareness of her life and the family around her.
What happens?
Hero hasn't spoken a word to her family for several years. It's not that she can't, more that she chooses not to. Her early morning travels around the sinister Squintum's house change when she falls at the feet of Miss Credence and is offered a job there. As her fantasy world begins to take over reality, Hero finds herself becoming increasingly worried by what is going on in the strange old house. Nothing has prepared her for her final terrifying discovery or given her any idea how to deal with the awful knowledge.
Anything else?
A strange story set in New Zealand. The reader becomes caught up in the imaginary world of Hero, but gradually we realise the danger she is placing herself in and can only watch to see if she can save herself, before disaster strikes. Mahy writes with flare and interest. She keeps the plot unfolding and the reader wondering what is really going on, in this sad story.
Other books by Margaret Mahy include A Summery Saturday Morning, Underrunners.
Who says so?
This review by Mrs Mad.
The publisher reckons...
In an attempt to distance herself from real life, Hero acts out fairy tale fantasies in the overgrown garden of a neighbouring mansion. Miss Credence, the owner, becomes a part of Hero's imaginings but soon, Hero realizes that her fantasy is taking her along an increasingly dark and sinister path.
