Mrs Mad's humble opinion
9/10 Very good. I am pleased with this.
What's it about?
The continued story of Lyra and her daemon Pantalaimon. Her mission continues through this second book and we now meet Will. A boy from our world who is closely tied up in the terrible battle between good and evil that will surely occur in the final book of this trilogy.
What happens?
Will has spent his life caring for his mother. Now he must leave her in the care of others because he has just killed a man. He sets out determined to discover what happened to his father all those years ago and why the men won't leave his mother alone. On the run Will finds his way in to another world where he meets Lyra, who has an important mission of her own. Three worlds are tied together by invisible bonds but the same doom seems to be edging towards them all.
Is it easy to read?
This is so well written that any reader who is capable and used to reading longer texts will find this a joy to read. It is important to read Northern Lights first as they are the same story and clearly interlinked.
Anything else?
A wonderful read. Pullman writes with a clear, concise style. He pulls the reader along with his incredibly inventive plot. Important points slip into place as ties are brought together from the first book. At the end one can only wonder how long we must wait for the last book in the trilogy?
Other books by Philip Pullman include Clockwork, His Dark Materials - Northern Lights, His Dark Materials - The Amber Spyglass, I Was a Rat!, Spring-Heeled Jack: a Story of Bravery and Evil, The Firework-Maker's Daughter, The Ruby in the Smoke, The Shadow in the North.

The publisher reckons...
Will is twelve years old and he's just killed a man. now he's on his own, on the run, determined to discover the truth about his father's disappearance. Then Will steps through a window in the air into Northern Lights, the first volume in the His Dark Materials trilogy, received enormous popular and critical acclaim, winning three major children's book prizes and regularly featuring in the bestseller lists. The Subtle Knife confirms the trilogy as an undoubted and enduring classic. another world, and finds himself with a companion - a strange, savage little girl called Lyra. Like Will, she has a mission which she intends to carry out at all costs. But the world of Cittágazze is a strange and unsettling place. Deadly, soul-eating Spectres stalk its streets while, high above, the wingbeats of distant angels sound against the sky. And in the mysterious Torre degli Angeli lurks Cittágazze's most important secret - an object which people from many worlds would kill to possess...
And here's a sample...
Something made his skin prickle before he opened the last door. His heart raced. He wasn't sure if he'd heard a sound from inside, but something told him that the room wasn't empty. He thought how odd it was that this day had begun with someone outside a darkened room, and himself waiting inside; and now the positions were reversed And as he stood wondering, the door burst open and something came hurtling at him like a wild beast. ...
And what do you think?
At the end of The Northern Lights, Lyra Silvertongue watched in fear and fascination as her father, Lord Asriel, created a bridge between worlds. Lyra and her daemon Pantalaimon are now lost in an alternate universe where they meet Will Parry, a fugitive
